Google has been promising a "real" Android laptop for years, and this autumn it finally arrived. Googlebook is Google's new premium laptop platform: Android and ChromeOS merged into one operating system, wrapped in high-end hardware from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo, with Gemini built into almost every corner. The first five models went on sale in early October, and the first independent reviews and battery tests are now in. Here is what Googlebook is, what each model costs, what the AI features actually do, and who should (and shouldn't) buy one.

What Is Googlebook?

Googlebook is the successor to the Chromebook idea, aimed squarely at the premium end of the market. Google first previewed the platform in May 2026 during The Android Show: I/O Edition, then fully detailed it on September 21. Under the hood, the operating system (built under the codename "Aluminium OS") combines ChromeOS's multi-window desktop, full Chrome browser and security model with a native Android app stack.

That matters because it fixes the old Chromebook weak spot: Android apps no longer feel like phone apps squeezed onto a laptop. The Play Store is adding a badge for desktop-class Android apps, and Google says around 20,000 mobile and PC games are optimised for keyboard, mouse and touch. Google also says existing Chromebooks will keep getting support, so this is an addition rather than an instant replacement.

All 5 Launch Models and Prices

Every Googlebook has to meet a common hardware bar: an Intel Core Ultra Series 3 or Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite chip with an NPU rated above 40 TOPS, at least 16GB of RAM, a touchscreen up to 2.8K, a backlit keyboard and a large haptic glass trackpad. MediaTek models are planned later. Pre-orders opened on September 21, with shelves stocked from October 4 in the US and October 5 in Canada, the UK, Ireland, France, Germany and Australia.

The Gemini Features: What They Actually Do

Google brands its AI layer "Gemini Intelligence", and a few features stand out:

  • Magic Pointer – wiggle the cursor and Gemini pops up right where you are working, ready for requests such as adding a date you are looking at to your calendar.
  • Rambler – AI dictation that tidies up natural speech (also coming to Pixel phones).
  • Create My Widget – describe a desktop widget in plain words and Gemini builds it.
  • Smarter Files search – on-device AI writes descriptions of your documents and photos so you can find them by what they contain.

The phone link is the other headline. Sign in and your Android phone's settings, saved passwords, Wi-Fi networks and messages come across. Android 17's Continue On and Cast My Apps let you pick up a task from your phone or run a phone app on the laptop without installing it. The Glowbar on the lid also returns: it lights up when you open the lid, shows charging level and animates when you talk to Gemini, and app developers can use it too.

If you followed our look at the AI gadget rush of holiday 2026, Googlebook fits the same pattern: the hardware is the delivery vehicle, and the AI assistant is the real product.

Real-World Battery Life: The Catch

Google advertises up to 14 hours of video playback and 16 hours of web browsing. Independent testing tells a more modest story. Tom's Guide ran all five models through its web-browsing test at 150 nits and 120Hz, and every one landed between roughly 10 and 12 hours: the HP led at 11:52, while the Dell XPS Googlebook, with the smallest 52Wh battery, came last at 10:04. A MacBook Air M5 lasted over 15 hours in the same test.

Two practical tips if you own one: drop the screen to 60Hz (Tom's Guide saw nearly two extra hours on the HP), and use Dark theme and Battery Saver, which are the conditions behind Google's own claims. The OS is brand new, so software updates may improve things.

Should You Buy a Googlebook?

Good fit: people who live in Chrome and on an Android phone, students and travellers who want a light, premium machine with long software support (Google promises up to 10 years of updates plus quarterly feature drops), and developers curious about the Linux environment, Antigravity and support for coding agents like Claude Code and Codex. Each purchase also bundles 12 months of Google AI Pro, three months of YouTube Premium, Adobe Photoshop and CapCut, plus a year of GeForce Now.

Think twice: if you rely on Windows-only software. For our Revit and AutoCAD readers, that is the key point: Googlebook is not a BIM workstation, so keep it as a light second machine for email, documents and viewing models in the browser. Also skip it if all-day battery life is your top priority.

Googlebook: Our Verdict PROS + Real desktop Android apps + Deep Android phone link + Useful Gemini shortcuts + Up to 10 years of updates + Premium, light hardware CONS - ~10-12 h tested battery - New OS, early bugs - No Windows-only apps - Not a Revit/BIM machine - Pricier than Chromebooks Best for Android + Chrome users

Conclusion

Googlebook is Google's most serious laptop effort yet. Merging Android and ChromeOS finally gives Android a proper desktop, the phone integration is tighter than anything Chromebooks offered, and the hardware is a clear step up. The trade-offs are a young operating system and battery life that trails the best Macs and Windows laptops. If you are deep in Google's world, the $899 Acer or the light Dell XPS are easy entry points; everyone else may want to wait for a few software updates and the MediaTek models.
